Scope and Content

Bundle of photographs originally stored in an envelope labelled "Boyhood, young roles, parents". These consist of family snapshots dating from RD's childhood and portraits of him in some of his early stage roles, as follows: /1 Mounted photograph of RD aged 2, wearing lace outfit. /2 Photograph mounted on oval backing card of RD as a toddler standing in front of a gothic-style window. /3 Copy photograph of RD with his uncle Sandy against seascape backdrop (original at FRD1/10/2/1/2). /4 Enlarged detail of RD, taken from the RD/Uncle Sandy photograph. /5 Large full-length print of RD aged 15 as a boy reciter in Manchester (a later copy of FRD1/10/2/1/58) [1920]. /6-8 Postcard prints of RD aged 14 in jester's outfit as Feste, and his brother as Sir Andrew Aguecheek from Twelfth Night [1919]. /9-12 A series of 4 postcard prints of RD aged 16 in costume as Lucius in Julius Caesar, at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Birmingham. /12 includes a storage envelope noting that it was owned by Mrs Ella Hall [RD's first wife] (Jul 1921). /13-16 A series of 4 different postcard prints of RD aged 17 in costume as Hamlet at a recital in Leeds. /16 is a duplicate of FRD1/10/2/1/13. /17-19 Three postcard prints of RD as Orlando in As You Like It, with Sir Frank Benson's Company; /17 is dated 1923, and /18-19 are duplicates of those in FRD1/10/2/1/49-56 which are dated 1926. /20 Group photograph of a theatre company (including RD) standing beside a large playbill; inscribed to RD from Pierre Fresnay; taken at Huddersfield (Jan 1927). /21 Small snapshot of 2 unidentified men in a dressing room (c. 1920s). /22 Small snapshot of RD's father, Ernst Emil Donat (27 Apr 1927). /23 Small snapshot of RD's mother Rose. /24-25 Two small snapshots of RD's parents; /24 also includes RD himself [c. 1920s]. /26-27 Copy photograph of RD's parents, taken from a publication, with a negative of the image.
