Scope and Content

Various test recordings made at home by RD, principally on a Christmas theme, in preparation for one of his Christmas broadcasts. There are a number of interruptions and false starts throughout the tape, due to intrusive background noise and RD's problems with asthma which affect his voice and breathing. The readings are as follows: (1) an anecdote about RD's cat, Miss Mouse, and her kittens; (2) an anecdote about Winston Churchill's cat; (3) a quote from a recent radio programme called 'Lift Up Your Hearts'; (4) 'Christus Natus Est' by John Alexander Chapman; (5) a reading from St Luke about the birth of Christ; (6) 'Before Dawn' by Walter de la Mare; (7) an anecdote about the death of Charles Dickens and his contribution to Christmas, followed by a tribute to Dickens written by G.K. Chesterton; (8) extracts from Tennyson's In Memoriam'; (9) 'A Little Boy of Heavenly Birth' [by John Bannister Tabb]; (10) Introduction and reading of 'Carol' by Jill Furse.

Duration: 22 minutes. With loose manuscript note of contents.
