Scope and Content

8371/1: Letters from M.D. Forbes to A.T. Bartholomew

The letters are mainly from the vacation periods and give typical holiday details, such as comments on the weather and descriptions of places visited, people seen, and plans for the immediate future. Forbes discusses the state of his health frequently, and in some detail. There are 101 letters, postcards and other items, dating from 1913-1936.

8371/2: Letters to M.D. Forbes from various correspondents

The correspondents are Henry Festing Jones or 'Enrico' (3 letters; 1915, 1916 and 1921); Charles Edward Sayle (2; 1916 and 1917); Ivor Armstrong Richards or 'Riccardo' (1; undated); 'Rinaldo' (1; 25 December, no year); A.T. Bartholomew (4; 1919 and 1921); Noel Teulon Porter (1; 1931); and 'Sherlock' (3; 1934).

Administrative / Biographical History

Mansfield Duval Forbes (1889-1936) became a fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, in 1913. He belonged to a circle which included the musicologist E.J. Dent and others such as Siegfried Sassoon and Rubert Brooke.

Augustus Theodore Bartholomew (1882-1933) attended Peterhouse, Cambridge (M.A., 1908). He was Assistant Librarian at Cambridge University Library.
