MS.Add.6472: Prayers and religious songs, in three hands, in English and Irish, c. 1880, 366 pages: (p. 3) 1st hand, paternosters and prayers for the rosary; (p. 9) catechism; (p. 247) 1st and 2nd hands, prayers, litanies and hymns. Some of the titles and one piece are in English; (p. 363) 3rd hand, verses, etc., in English and Irish. On p. 1 are scribblings, etc., some in a code in which figures are used. On p. 362 is 'Mark Donohue Cloomffa Maynoth'.

MS.Add.6473: Ossianic matter and related papers, in Irish and English, 18th - 19th centuries, 242 pages. A miscellany of poems of the Ossianic Cycle and tales. A note of the date occurs at the end of almost every poem.

MS.Add.6553: A long statement concerning the state of corruption into which Irish education had fallen owing to religious rivalry, based upon an incident that occurred during the examination of certain persons for a teaching diploma; in English, 1896, 55 folios. The statement was made by Mrs Mary Hartley, wife of Professor (Sir) W.N. Hartley (1846-1913), and transcribed by S.H. O'Grady, who added occasional marginal notes.

Administrative / Biographical History

Standish Hayes O'Grady (1832-1915), scholar and antiquarian, was born at Castleconnel, Co. Limerick, and educated at Rugby and Trinity College Dublin. Although trained as an civil engineer, he worked on compiling a catalogue of the Irish manuscripts in the British Museum, which was completed after his death by Robert Fowler and published in 1926. O'Grady also translated heroic stories from the Gaelic. His own works included Silva Gadelica (1892), a collection of old Irish tales.
