Thomas Kidd was Captain of the ship 'Vision' when it was lost at sea following a storm on a trip from Liverpool to Arica, Chile, being abandoned off Cape Horn on 1 November 1858. The crew were rescued by the German ship 'Steinwarder' and landed at Talcahuano, Chile, on 22 November.

'Vision' was an iron sailing vessel, built in 1854 by Sandeman & McLaurin of Partick, and owned by Handysides & Henderson.
