Scope and Content

By Gustav Holst, 1916. For string quartet.

1. Score, non-autograph manuscript, except for a few words and instructions in Gustav Hols's hand [19pp]

2. Parts, mostly non-autograph manuscripts, apart from a few details: Viola [2 parts, 12pp], Violin II [2 parts, 11pp], Violin I [2 parts, 10pp], Cello [2 parts, 9pp]. Some blue pencil annotations are visible on the manuscripts.

3. Photocopy of a note written by David Matthews regarding the Phantasy Quartet and offering appraisal and critique of the piece (undated)

4. Original envelope in which the manuscripts were kept, labelled in Gustav Holst's hand 'Str Quartet on Folksongs Score and Parts'

Note on the folio bag in Imogen Holst's hand states 'Score non autograph (except for a few words)' and in Rosamund Strode's hand states 'IH's [Imogen Holst's] other envelope says (J.M. Joseph) after non-aut.' Covering page of the manuscripts also gives Jane Joseph as the hand.
