Scope and Content

This section contains files of notes and music manuscripts of work in progress as well as files containing numerous transcriptions of works collected for reference or for possible editing or arrangement. Most are in Imogen Holst's hand.

Imogen's music manuscripts for works by other composers which she had completed editing or arranging, or worked on in some detail, are included in section HOL/2/1.

The files mostly contain music manuscripts but there are also some files of notes, papers and correspondence. Many of these papers were arranged into envelopes and files by Imogen Holst and this foundational arrangement has been preserved.

Arrangement

The papers in this series were found filed in envelopes which were annotated, numbered and placed in roughly alphabetical order on a shelf at 9 Church Walk labelled 'IH Editing'. Imogen Holst had written on the front of many of the envelopes and in these cases the papers are presumably found as filed by her. The numbers on the envelopes were however not Imogen's and therefore presumably the order and arrangement of the envelopes on the shelf was also not hers. The shelf of envelopes has therefore been rearranged, although the papers have been left as bundled by Imogen Holst. The music manuscripts for editions and arrangements which Imogen Holst either completed or worked on in some detail have been removed from this sequence and placed in series HOL/2/1. Printed music has also been removed and placed in series HOL/2/4. Photocopies of music manuscripts held elsewhere have been placed in series HOL/2/2. The remaining papers form this series HOL/2/3 and consist primarily of transcriptions of works made by Imogen Holst presumably for reference or collected for future editing work. Where Imogen Holst made notes on the front of the envelopes these have been preserved.
