Series of Gustav Holst's engagement diaries. The early diaries contain very brief details of appointments, apart from the period from 30 Oct 1918 to 30 Jun 1919 when Gustav Holst was engaged as a Musical Organiser in the Educational Department of the Young Men's Christian Association in Salonica and Constantinople. During this period Gustav Holst entered detailed daily entries in the diaries describing his work and travels.
From 1927 onwards the diary entries become generally fuller with detailed daily entries made during his periods of travel either in the UK or abroad. During his travels Gustav Holst writes daily entries in the diaries giving details of places travelled to, sights and people visited and appointments kept. These more detailed entries for Gustave Holst's travels include trips made in Dec 1927-Jan 1928 (Germany, Austria and Prague), Dec 1928- Mar 1929 (Italy), Apr-May 1929 (USA), Nov 1929 (Paris), Apr 1930 (Netherlands) and Jan-May 1932 (USA) as well as numerous trips within the UK.
For some years the diaries also include monthly cash accounts, details of income and income tax return, telephone numbers and addresses.
Imogen Holst made transcripts of her father's diaries which are found at the end of the series under ref nos. HOL/1/6/24-25. There is also a list of Gustav Holst's movements abroad, made from his diaries, item ref no. HOL/1/6/26.
