Gustav Holst's notebooks

Scope and Content

Series of small pocket notebooks in which Gustav Holst jotted notes about various matters and subjects. Some entries are of a diary nature, for example, details of appointments, addresses, telephone numbers and accounts, other entries are lists or reminders, or jottings on musical matters including notes about performances, works, programmes, timings, players, singers, pupils etc. They include rough drafts of programmes, headings for lectures and details to be criticized during rehearsals.

Some of the notebooks are themselves dated but others have been arranged by Imogen Holst in envelopes which are annotated by her with dates, justifications for dates, and further details. There are several notebooks for some years and none for other years. Notebooks for 1924, 1925 and 1927 are missing.

The notebooks and envelopes are wrapped separately but stored together in the same box.
