Copy typewritten letter from Frederick Lanchester to B. Melvill Jones

Scope and Content

Thanks Jones for letter (LAN/1/11/11); Jones is mistaken in thinking Lanchester wanted to enter on an immediate discussion, he had only asked him to read his writings on the subject with a view to taking the matter up at some future date. Mentions confusion in teaching at Birmingham University where different systems are used by different teachers. The letter from Professor Cramp referred to is printed in “The Engineer” (Vol. 163, June 25, 1937, with reply from Lanchester, Vol. 164, of Automobile Engineers Proceedings, Vol. 31. pp. 591-592). The reply mentioned by Lanchester in which Cramp is rebuked is not the reply published in “The Engineer” and appears to be a private letter which is not in this collection.
