Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Dumbarton Philosophical and Literary Society was established in November, 1867. The constitution states that the objects of the society are: 'to aid the advancement of the Mathematical, Physical, Natural, and Social Sciences, with their applications; to promote the diffusion of scientific knowledge; to cultivate a taste for Literature, by holding meetings at stated intervals to receive and discuss communications on scientific and literary subjects by the Members, and by gentlemen who may be invited to make such communications, and in such other ways as may be agreed on; and to promote social and friendly intercourse among the Members.'
