Photographic copy of a map of Holme Pierrepont, Nottinghamshire; n.d. [c.1838-1845]

Scope and Content

The map shows the parish of Holme Pierrepont in Nottinghamshire, and is detailed, including field numbers, field names and tenants' names.

The map has an estimated date of 1829 written in pencil at the bottom left corner, but this is believed to have been added in the early 20th century, and recent research suggests that it is incorrect. A comparison with an 1829 survey of the Manvers estate (Ma S 68) and reduced-scale map (Ma 7 P 8) shows that the tenants' names do not match. A comparison with a working copy survey, begun in 1829 but recording changes in tenancy up to c.1853 (Ma S 69), suggests that the map in fact dates from between 1838 (when tenant W. Haynes took on the field pt. 113) and 1845 (when W. Sanday gave up the field p. 81).

Administrative / Biographical History

The original map is in private ownership. It is not known exactly when the map was drawn up, but its contents suggest that it was an estate map commissioned by the Pierrepont family, Earls Manvers, owners of the Holme Pierrepont estate.
