Scope and Content

The Personal Papers in this collection include (1) 15 disbound pocket diaries, 1851-65, containing numerous entries by E.R.G.Salisbury, mainly relating to his business interests, but some personal memoranda. (2) Business and legal documents, including prospectuses, reports, papers and accounts of several companies covering the period 1841-1873. (3) Election addresses, letters, posters, notices for the Chester elections 1857, 1859, 1865, 1868 and 1874 (E.R.G.Salisbury was a successful candidate in 1857, defeated in 1859). Also included is a printed letter from W.E.Gladstone, 1868 [an election address? In Welsh]. (4) A collection of scrapbooks, mounted press cuttings, leaflets, cartoons, pamphlets, 1815-1885. Many of the items refer to Chester. Several cuttings refer to the Franco-Prussian War, 1871. (5) Lists of names of 'worthies' in Wales and the Border counties. Cuttings of historical and biographical interest relating to the Border counties. (6) Seven chronological catalogues of E.R.G.S.'s library, a list of folios and cuttings from booksellers' catalogues. (7) Individual issues of newspapers the earliest being The Free Briton Extraordinary, no.CLXXII, 12 March 1732 and the latest, The Liverpool Mercury, 29 February 1884. A bundle of newspapers, some incomplete or fragmentary, 1735-1880.

The c.1300 volumes on Wales and the Border Counties in his library were added to the University Library collection and are all listed inon the library online catalogue.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Personal Papers and library of E.R.G. Salisbury were bought by the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire in 1886.
