Scope and Content

1722 photographs of architecture, sculpture, carvings, landscapes etc, almost all taken by John Piper, and 107 pages with mounted photographs, almost all of details of church carvings.

Some photographs have been identified by John Piper on the back, and a small number have been squared up for transfer to canvas. There is some duplication of photographs.

969 photographs were arranged in folders or envelopes, probably by Piper. The descriptions on the folders are not always accurate, but they have been kept as original files. The remaining 753 loose photographs have been arranged into groups - castles and country houses, chapels, churches, church interiors, farm buildings, landscapes, medieval carvings, other buildings, sculpture and memorials and townscapes.

Related Material

These photographs probably include many original prints from the negatives held in the Tate Archive photograph collection, which were donated by Piper in the 1980s.
