Elizabeth Low was born in Gourock on 28 December 1924. She attended Greenock Academy before going on to study at Glasgow School of Art in 1942. Bet Low was best known as a Scottish figurative and landscape painter, notable as one of the Glasgow Girls, and as a co-founder of the Clyde Group. She was also involved with the Unity Theatre in Glasgow creating set designs, and was a co-founder of the influential New Charing Cross Gallery in 1963. Low exhibited widely, and a retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Third Eye Centre, Glasgow, and the Pier Arts Centre, Stromness. She was awarded a DLitt by the University of Glasgow in 1999. Bet died on 2 December 2007, in Glasgow, Scotland, aged 82.
