Administrative / Biographical History

Stewart Bros was created in early 1948  , originally as a vehicle to print a magazine entitled The Morgue, (named after the lower hall at St Peter's Episcopal Church, near St George's Cross) the monthly publication of the 25th Glasgow Scout Group, with which the partners were associated. Orders were obtained by word of mouth and advertising in shop windows, and were executed at commercial rates. The partners were all students of the University of Glasgow, Scotland: John G Stewart (MB, ChB 1951), Charles Peter Stewart (MB, ChB 1951) and Joyce M Whitbread (Mrs J G Stewart, BSc 1948). The specimen copies of the magazine were given to the Glasgow Scouts for their archives. The firm operated from a top-floor flat in Bank Street, Glasgow. At times urgent work was done at night, upsetting a neighbour below who twice informed the police that the occupants were either conterfeiters or Soviet agents. The firm closed after all the partners had graduated and dispersed in 1951  .
