Scope and Content

Round silver metal badge with ornamentation at the edges. At the centre of the badge are two shields and a banner reading “Hull Royal Infirmary.” Around the edge of the badge reads “Training School for Nurses”

On the back is engraved: “Presented to Olive A. Sambourne, Second Graduate, 1946”

Administrative / Biographical History

Olive Annie Sambourne was born in Parr, Cornwall in 1926. She trained as a nurse at Hull Royal Infirmary and Sutton Annexe Hull between 1943 and 1946. After qualifying she worked for two years as a staff nurse, then six as a theatre sister. She took a break from nursing to marry and raise a family (c.1954). When her children were grown, she completed a back to nursing course and returned to work in the geriatric unit of Nether Edge Hospital, Sheffield. Sambourne remained at Nether Edge Hospital until her retirement. She passed away in 2018.
