Autograph letter signed from Arthur Wellesley, 1st duke of Wellington, to Lord John Russell.

Concerning the discharge of soldiers from the ranks, suggesting a system of allowing Infantry soldiers to enlist for periods of 10 years at a time. Signed Wellington.London, 27 January 1847.

Administrative / Biographical History

Arthur Wellesley (1796-1852), military leader famous for his victory over Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo in 1815, prime minister from 1828 to 1830.

Lord John Russell (1792-1878), prime minister from 1846-1852 and 1865-1866, created first earl Russell of Kingston Russell in 1861.
