Administrative / Biographical History

Harold Lockley (1916-2004) was born in Barwell, Leicestershire. He read history at London University and then entered Loughborough College in 1937 to train as a Physical Education teacher. He served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and later took Orders. In 1946 he became curate of All Saints, Loughborough and in 1947 chaplain of Loughborough College. He was Vicar of St Thomas, South Wigston, Leics, 1951-58, a Canon of Leicester Cathedral from 1958 and Archdeacon of Loughborough.1963-86. From 1953 he was also a part-time lecturer in divinity at Leicester University. His wife Ursual Wedell, whom he married in 1947, was closely related to the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, executed in 1945 for his involvement in the plot against Hitler.
