Charter by David Cunningham, Archdeacon of Argyll and provost of the collegial church of Hamilton, with the consent of the archbishop and the chapter of Glasgow, founding a chapel, a new church and a perpetual chantry to be built at his expenses within the walls of Glasgow, for the maintenance of which he mortifies a tenement formerly belonging to Andrew Bowhill and purchased from Margaret Scott his widow, a rood of land in the Gallowgate, and an acre in Dowhill with a croft commonly called Berry-croft with yard and pertinents with six rigs in Provansyde, an annual rent of 40 shillings Scots out of the lands of Dribs, a annual rent of 40 shillings Scots out of the lands of Melvinis orchard near Rutherglen, an annual rent of 9 shillings Scots purchased from Georges Murehouse, an annual rent of 8 shillings Scots acquired from George Hugonis out of his tenement near the Green and also a tenement acquired from Margaret Rawburn. The dean and chapter of Glasgow are appointed patrons of this chantry.

Scope and Content

Three seals: the one of the chapter of Glasgow and the one of David Cunningham, archdeacon of Argyll and provost of the collegiate kirk of Hamilton. The last one can not be identified. Pendant on tags.

The seal of David Cunningham represents a round-based shield bearing arms: a shakefork, between the capital letter D to the right and the capital letter C to the left. Supporters: two pelicans vulning themselves. There is a motto on an escroll above: MISERERE MEI DOMINE. The legend is between raised borders: S' DAVID CUNYNGHAM.

The document was written on parchment by the notary John Thornton and it is bearing his authentification mark. It is written in a very cursive pre-secretary hand. The first letter is slightly ornamented.
