Scope and Content

Seal in good condition of John Mure, Vicar-General for Scotland in 1461. Pendant on a tag.

The seal represents St Andrew with nimbus wearing loose vestments. In his right hand he holds a large saltire and in his left hand a book clasped to his breast. He stands within a niche with a pinnacled canopy supported upon pillars. beneath the niche under an arch is the figure of a monk in prayer. The legend is between carved borders: FRIS-IOHIS-MURE VICARII GEN'ALIS ORD'IS P'DIR I SCOCIA.

The document was written on parchment by the notary David Red and it is bearing his authentification mark. It is written in a pre-secretary hand. Typical secretary hand letters include: p, h, final s, open e. The first letters are ornamented and the first words are in bookhand.
