Administrative / Biographical History

H. R. (Henry Rees) Davies (1861-1940) was born in Menai Bridge, Anglesey, the son of Richard Davies, M.P. (1818-1896), and a member of a successful Anglesey shipowners family. H. R. Davies continued the family interest in the sea through his activities on behalf of the Anglesey Lifeboat service and yachting in the Menai Strait. He was a graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, and became a leading figure in the community of Anglesey, as a county councillor, J. P. and Deputy Lieutenant, through which he was involved with a variety of community issues. He had an interest in the history of the Menai Straits and wrote a chapter on the subject for the Anglesey Inventory, 1937, of the Royal Commission on Ancient Monuments, and later A Review of the Records of the Conway and the Menai Ferries, published in 1942.
