Evidence presented in land dispute at Chalgrove, Oxfordshire

Scope and Content

At the Easter session of the 1678 quarter Sessions, charges were heard arising out of a dispute over the ownership of 9 a. land, called Buckards or Bucketts and ¼ of Hyde Mead, part of the manor of St. Cleres. The tenant of Lincoln College was Elizabeth Wiggin, widow, and on August 27 1677 she and other members of her household were involved in a 'riot' with Frances Quatermain, the wife, and the servants of Robert Quatermain, tenant to Thomas Hall, owner of the neighbouring manor, who also claimed the land. Both sides were indicted for riotous Assembly and Assault and Battery., Lincoln College also instructed Mrs. Wiggin to cut and carry away corn growing on the land, and she and others were sued by Robert Quatermain for damages of £20. Ownership of the land was decided in the case Hall v. Hall. A verdict of not guilty was found in each case, and Lincoln College paid Robert Quatermain £50 to renounce all future claims to the land.
