Scope and Content

The collection relates mainly to industrial relations and includes Industrial Relations files, 1968-1983; subject files, 1970s-1980s; correspondence with individual trade unions, 1947-1980, including Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunication and Plumbing Union; National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants; Supervisors' Chapels; Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers; Transport and General Workers Union; Revisers, Ink and Roller Makers and Auxilliaries; and British Printing Industries Federation, 1967-1980.

Administrative / Biographical History

The factory was originally owned by Fisher Foils and was opened prior to the Second World War. One of its main products was very thin printed aluminium foil used in food and drug packaging. The printing processes used meant that the various London printing unions were involved. The factory was taken over by Alcan in the 1960s and closed in 1984.

Acquisition Information

This collection was deposited with the Centre by Brian Leahy who became Industrial Relations Manager at Alcan in 1979 after a career in industrial relations.
