Letter from J.D. Hooker [Joseph Dalton Hooker] to George Maw

Scope and Content

Written from Pendock Rectory, Tewkesbury. Manuscript

He was very concerned to read of the death of Maw's little child, while looking for that of his friend Hanbury [Daniel Hanbury, botanist] which he had heard of the day before and knew would appear in the column of deaths; he feels sincerely for Mrs Maw [Frederica Mary Maw] and for Harriet [Harriet Anne Hooker, botanical artist, his daughter], who will see it abroad and be touched; he hopes that the other children have pulled through; at his friend Symonds' [William Samuel Symonds, geologist] suggestion, he has brought his son Brian for a geological tour, to remain until Thursday; it is the first good outing he has had since he was with Maw, and it has done him good; he has eaten more in the past two days than at any time since he was in Marocco [Morocco]; he has a nice drawing of the draboid plant, but without the fruit its genus cannot be determined; he asks if Maw can get its flower, and from that the fruit; he sends his sincere regrets to Mrs Maw. Dated 29 Mar, no year [1875; the subject matter matches letters written in Mar 1875]
