Letter from J.D. Hooker [Joseph Dalton Hooker] [to George Maw]

Scope and Content

Written from Royal Gardens, Kew. Manuscript

He and Professor Oliver [Daniel Oliver, librarian of the Kew Herbarium] have inspected the calcareous tufa [a variety of limestone often with many fossilised wetland plants] Maw has sent him, but they cannot find anything at all, not even the dicotyledonous leaf indicated by Maw on one fragment; he does not doubt that the tufa is full of vegetable remains but they cannot find any clue to their nature in the specimens sent; he is happy to send the specimens to any other botanists for further examination
