Letter from Jos. D. Hooker [Joseph Dalton Hooker] to George Maw

Scope and Content

Written from Royal Gardens, Kew. Manuscript

He thanks Maw for the Romulea which arrived safe; they are improving fast in the herbaceous department, but their young assistant who has been so useful is engaged to marry 'with no prospects' and so he supposes they will lose him; he thinks that young gardeners are the biggest fools he knows; with regard to Maw's paper, he cannot do Thursday of next week as there have been complaints of papers in hand being postponed for others later given in, and though Maw's is short it may cause issues; Maw should send it up anyway, though they have over three weeks of papers in hand; he wishes he could go to Corfu [Greece] with Maw; he is tired of 'this life of scientific drudgery' which is such hard work; he is thankful that the work is unselfish; they hope to see Maw before he goes to Corfu; he sends kind regards to Maw's 'O'
