Administrative / Biographical History

In around 1841 Thomas Lucas Paterson (b.1811) started in business as a commission agent and merchant at 1 Ingram Street, Glasgow, Scotland. By 1850  he was a partner in the firm of James, Black & Co , manufacturers and calico printers, at 22 Royal Exchange Place and 74 Buchanan Street, Glasgow. By 1852  he also had his own saved linen factory with an office at 145 Queen Street, Glasgow. In 1853  he purchased the Dowanhill estate in the West End of Glasgow from John Buchanan with a view to developing it as a residential area. The first phase of this development took place between 1853 and 1873  under Paterson's personal supervision. In around 1864  Paterson took his son William into partnership, forming a new company, T L Paterson & Co , trading in cotton and sugar. In T L Paterson & Co 1874  went into liquidation and Paterson's entire estate was given into a trust for his creditors. Later Paterson managed to arrange a loan for £55,000 from the Scottish Union Insurance Co and entered into a joint venture with Robert Cassels, owner of the Glasgow Iron Co . On this basis, he persuaded his creditors to release to him the unfeued lands of Dowanhill, but in 1888  he was declared bankrupt. C D Gairdner, general manager of Union Bank of Scotland, 1836-92, was a Trustee of the T L Paterson Trust.
