Microfilms of William Petty papers, consisting of:  

  • Literary manuscripts
  • Papers relating to Ireland, including volumes of Irish population returns, ca. 1659
  • Correspondence
  • Papers relating to shipbuilding and navigation
  • Letters and papers of the 6th Marquis of Lansdowne and other 19th and 20th century scholars who have used the papers for their research
  • Miscellaneous deeds, mainly relating to London property
  • Schedules and maps of Petty's 'Down Survey'

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir William Petty (1623-1687) was a political economist. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Entry to read in the Library is permitted only on presentation of a valid reader's card (for admissions procedures see http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/specialcollections).

Acquisition Information

The microfilms were deposited in the Library in 1976 and given in 1993.
