Personal and writers' correspondence

Scope and Content

Partly typewritten, partly autograph correspondence with Hughes by friends and acquaintances, including some well known literary and public figures. In some cases the letters include drafts of replies and notes made by Hughes relating to them. Material enclosed with letters, such as photographs, is also included if it is not large, although larger enclosures such as volumes have been placed separately under the heading 'Writings and enclosed material by others' (Add MS 88918/43-120). In some cases the correspondence is addressed to Ted, in some to Ted and Carol and in others to Carol. Correspondence sent to Carol Hughes following her husband's death can be found at Add MS 88918/40-42.

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within alphabetical sequence. Letters from individuals with surname Mac and Mc are filed together with Mac names first.
