Scope and Content

Partly typewritten and partly autograph correspondence (with some enclosures) sent to Ted Hughes and Daniel Weissbort by individuals and organisations in connection with their work as editors of the journal, Modern Poetry in Translation. The majority of the letters were sent to Hughes by Weissbort, but other correspondents include Janos Csokits, Per Henrik Friis, Eric White (Arts Council GB), Paul Tabori, David Rokeah, Thor Vilhjalmsson, Guy Le Clercq, M. Mindlin (editor of Censorship), Atlantic Monthly Press, Thomas Kabdebo (Anthology of Hungarian Poetry in English translation), Miroslav Holub and Zaituna Umer. Letters sent to Weissbort by R.P. Ahleen, Erich Fried and Penguin publishers; to Hughes by his sister, Olwyn and an annotated draft of points of a possible agreement about the publication of Modern Poetry in Translation by Jonathan Cape Ltd are included. Drafts of a piece written by Hughes as an introduction to Modern Poetry in Translation (1982) and a letter sent to Hughes about translations of the poetry of Pablo Neruda by W.S. Merwin are also included.
