Tales from Ovid began when Hughes translated four passages from 'Metamorphoses' in an anthology After Ovid edited by Michael Hofmann and James Lasdun (1994). He later translated an additional 20 stories. The collection was published by Faber and Faber in 1997. Hughes was awarded the Whitbread Book of the Year for Tales from Ovid in 1998.
