Phèdre

Scope and Content

Partly autograph, partly typewritten and printed. Contains undated drafts of the play with annotations and corrections on loose papers and in two notebooks. A page taken from the New York Review (dated 5th October 1997), which was inserted into one of the notebooks together with a few pages of a play draft have been removed and placed at the end of the folder. Many of the loose papers used for drafts of the play were clearly recycled by Hughes and they include pages of The Iron Woman and a letter sent to Hughes. The typewritten drafts with autograph annotations are partial rather than complete. Also includes copies of correspondence sent by Hughes to Jonathan Kent, director of the first production of Phèdre, in which Hughes writes about his feelings about the play and its production.

Arrangement

Pages of the typewritten drafts of the play have been retained in their original order.
