Scope and Content

Autograph prose drafts written by Hughes the earliest of which may date from his time during National Service (1949-1951). Exercise book contains mainly untitled stories, whilst drafts written on loose papers are entitled 'The Son of the Mantis, the Baboons and the Mantis' and 'Jataka I'. A script entitled 'The Two Days of Man', a fragment of a script entitled 'Magark Speaks', two drafts of prose entitled 'A Lady Reads a Skull' and a draft of what appears to be a translation of Maria Stuart by Friedrich Schiller are also included.
