A notebook containing an essay by Lancashire on "The race character of the working classes, and their distinctions in moral and social degrees" (41pp). Lancashire's essay identifies and analyses the material and moral conditions of different sections of the working class population, with particular emphasis on the barriers to the social and morel improvement of the poorest. A covering letter from Lancashire to "Mrs Schwann" (i.e. Mrs Charles Schwann, the wife of the Liberal MP for North Manchester], 25 June 1891, explaining why he has written the essay.
There are also some enclosures with the notebook, which relate to philosophy and appear to be in Adamson's hand (it is unclear how they came to be in the volume).
