The Microbe Hunters was written by Paul De Kruif, an American author, as a popular history of medical discoveries. Jonathan Cape were to publish the British edition but before doing so asked Ross to look through the chapter which concerned him. Ross took legal advice as he felt that much of the content was libellous and misleading, and eventually Cape agreed to withdraw the chapter from the British edition. Because the book had already been published in America Ross attempted to vindicate himself through the media of the press.
