Administrative / Biographical History
The British Council was established in 1934 to promote a wider knowledge of the UK abroad and to develop cultural relations between the UK and other countries. In the UK it maintained centres to provide services for visitors from overseas. It was also responsible for the accommodation and welfare services for colonial students in the UK.
