Scope and Content

Letter from George Gissing to Morley Roberts (1857-1942) novelist and lifelong friend of Gissing, whom he met whilst studying at Owens College, Manchester. Roberts was the author of a fictionalized biography of Gissing, The Private Life of Henry Maitland (1912). Gissing writes: "I am labouring to finish my prefaces to Dickens which I am doing for Methuens. This kind of work takes it out of me."
