Letter

Scope and Content

Letter from Alfred Gissing to Winifred Isaac. He writes in response to a request for a George Gissing autograph: "all that I can find is a small slip that was evidently taken from one of his books years ago, - 'G. R Gissing, O Coll. 1876'. Owens College, Manchester. Being of such an early date it is certainly a curiosity, & as it is perfectly genuine it may be of interest to you... I agree with you about the writing of By the Ionian Sea. It is that gentleness, so essential to all true art, which is sadly lacking in these days."

Dated at Barbon, Westmorland, via Carnforth.
