Papers relating to the Gissing Commemorative Blue Plaque

Scope and Content

Chris Kohler's collection of letters, photographs and ephemera relating to the organization of the unveiling ceremony of the Greater London Council's commemorative Blue Plaque for George Gissing at 33 Oakley Gardens. Gissing lived at Oakley Gardens from 1882 to 1884. The material comprises:

  • /1: 39 letters and postcards exchanged between Kohler and various correspondents regarding the unveiling ceremony, dated 7 April 1975 to 11 July 1975, and related printed material (43 sheets);
  • /2: 22 photographs of the unveiling ceremony held at 33 Oakley Gardens on 12 June 1975: 11 colour prints (8.8cms x 12cms) and 11 black and white prints (various sizes);
  • /3: 14 items of printed material and ephemera relating to the ceremony, including a list of invitees, copies of newspaper articles, several copies of the speech made by Pierre Coustillas and the text of a BBC feature on the event by Ann Williams (31 sheets).
