Scope and Content

Preliminary artwork by Jill Barton for 'The Happy Hedgehog Band'. The file contains an early characterisation sketch, executed in watercolour and pencil, which was rejected by David Lloyd at Walker Books as 'twee' [see explanatory note at series level]. This sketch is signed by the artist, and has a manuscript note on the back to 'Mark'. The file also includes three unfinished character sketches of hedgehogs, executed in watercolour and pencil; one character sketch of the dog, also executed in watercolour and pencil; a preliminary pencil sketch for the vignette of Norbert and Billy which appears on page 12 of the published book; and a preliminary watercolour sketch of the hedgehog band playing in the woods, for pages 17 and 18 of the book, annotated in pencil 'skip up colour'.
