Lionel Charles Robbins 1898 - 1984

Robbins was educated at Southall County School, University College, London,and London School of Economics. Robbins was initially a Lecturer at LondonSchool of Economics, 1925-27, then Professor Economics 1929 - 1961. He wasalso a Fellow and Lecturer at New College, Oxford 1927 - 1929. Robbins wasChairman of the Financial Times 1961 - 1970, Chairman of the Committee onHigher Education 1961 - 1964, and a member of the Court of Governors at theLondon School of Economics (Chairman 1968 - 1974). From 1941 - 1945 he wasDirector of the Economic Section of Offices of the War Cabinet 1941 - 1945,and from 1954 to 1955 he was President of the Royal Economic Society. He wasalso a member of the Court of Governors, London School of Economics,(Chairman, 1968-74). Robbins was also a Trustee of the National Gallery,1952 - 1959, 1960-67, 1967-74, and for the Tate Gallery, 1953 - 1959, 1962 -1967. From 1955 to 1981 he was Director of the Royal Opera House, CoventGarden, and President of the British Academy 1962 - 1967.
