TETSWORTH NATIONAL SCHOOL

Scope and Content

This school was built in 1848 at a cost of £557, paid for by Rev.J.W.Peers, vicar of Tetsworth, among others. It started as a Church of England School, and was later affiliated to the National Society. The building was intended to accommodate 90 pupils, but by 1871 only had 51 children. This was partly due to the fact that another school was in existence in the village by then. In 1877 a School Board for Tetsworth and Attington was set up, followed by a Board School in 1881. Please see CC4/210 for other records of this school.

The National School records consist mainly of plans and specifications for the original school buildings and later additions/alterations. The documents were received in this office on permanent loan in May 1908 as Acc 1712 and February 1984, as accession 2244. Further records were deposited as part of Acc 3387 in January 1992 and as part of Acc 3926 in February 1995 or were transferred from the Oxfordshire Education Department to the Oxfordshire History Centre.
