Administrative / Biographical History

Oswald Raynor Arthur (1905-1973) was born on 16 December 1905, and entered the Nigerian Political Service in 1928. He was transferred from Nigeria to Cyprus as an administrative officer in 1937, and was appointed Commissioner in 1947 and Chief Commissioner in 1948. He was Colonial Secretary in Bermuda, 1951-1954, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Falkland Islands, 1954-1957, and Governor and Commander in Chief of the Bahamas from 1957 until his retirement in 1960. He married Mary Elizabeth Spring Rice in 1935. Arthur lived in Sussex after his retirement, and died on 4 December 1973.
