Weaving industry in Coventry

The ribbon weaving trade in Coventry grew out of the cloth trade. The firstrecorded mention is the 'Silk Weaver Company' founded in 1627. By 1818 therewere 3,008 engine looms and 5,483 hand looms in the city. Mr Josiah Beckstarted using the new steam powered looms in 1831, causing riots and theburning of the looms. However, within 20 years steam factories were common.
