Scope and Content

Manuscript diary illustrated with albumen prints, two albums, and loose prints. This material all relates to the Lovett and Egerton families. The following indicates the main individuals concerned:
Col. Thomas Heaton Lovett (1871-1892) of Belmont (later Henlle Hall) Salop, had a brother John Richard (see Y3022PP/13), and four sons and six daughters. Of these:
The eldest son, Hubert Richard (1854-1908), was educated at Cheltenham College and joined the 60th Rifles in 1873. An account of a hunting trip in the Vale of Kashmir in 1875 is at Y3022MM. He served in the Afghan War of 1879-80, in South Africa in 1881 and in Egypt in 1882. He retired as a Major in 1894, succeeding to his father's estate and died in 1908. Y3022NN relates to his service in India in the 1870s and 1880s.
The eldest daughter, Margaret Josephine Lovett (1852-1899) was married in 1887 to Col. Francis William Egerton (1854-1908). See Y3022NN/37 and Y3022OO-PP. For Brigadier General Sir Charles Egerton (1848-1921), Francis William's brother, see Y3022OO/14.
The fourth daughter was Evelyn Grace Lovett (born 1861) who appears in Y3022OO/23.
The fifth daughter, Mabel Bessie Lovett (1864-1910) was married to Sir Alfred Hamilton Grant (1872-1937) in 1896. See Y3022OO/4.
The sixth daughter, Ethel Elizabeth Lovett (1866- ?) was married in 1901 to Lt. Col. Lambert Alfred Graham Hanmer DSO (1868-1918). See Y3022OO/8, 23 and 32. Their daughter Miss Rosemary Hanmer was the donor of these photographs.
