Administrative / Biographical History
In January 1952 the Post Office Controlling Officers' Association, the Central Telegraph Superintending Officers' Association and the London Postal Superintending Officers' Association, all members of the Federation of Post Office Supervising Officers, amalgamated together as the Association of Post Office Controlling Officers. The final member of the Federation, the Postal Inspectors' Association, did not join the Association until 1959. In 1969 the APOCO became the Post Office Management Staffs Association, changing its name again to the Communication Managers' Association in 1981.
Reference: Arthur Marshall and Victoria Ryan, Historical Directory of Trade Unions. Volume 1 (Gower: Farnborough, 1980).
All those unions which have now merged to form the Communication Managers' Association have been given the reference MSS.225. They are further divided into fonds by an alphabetical suffix.
The Modern Records Centre uses a classification scheme. For further details of the scheme, see http://www.warwick.ac.uk/services/library/mrc/mrcclass.shtml. It is compatible with ISAD(G): General International Standard Archival Description (2000).
