Scope and Content

Fair copies, mainly holograph, of Oxford University Chancellor's Prize essays and poems, with seventeen Newdigate Prize poems, collected by Lord Grenville as Chancellor.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Wyndham Grenville, Baron Grenville (1759-1834), statesman, was chancellor of Oxford University from 1810 to 1834. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

The collection was bought from Thomas Thorp and given to the Library by the Friends of the Bodleian in 1939.

The collection was owned and arranged by George Matthew Fortescue and remained at Dropmore until 1939.
