Scope and Content

Three volumes of memoirs, typed from his own note-book and diaries, andpartly compiled from his correspondence.

  • Travels in West and West Central Africa, January 1897-April 1898 whileserving in the Gold Coast Constabulary, with copies of letters and papers relatingto the period in an appendix at the back of the volume
  • African travels, November 1898-November 1899
  • Description of the period 1900-November 1901 including the Ashanti, and April 1902-April 1903in the Gold Coast, with part of a diary concerning a visit to SouthernNigeria in June 1913

Administrative / Biographical History

Captain Herbert John Collett Leland (1873-1931), DSO (1900), entered the 5thBattalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers, 1890, served with the Gold CoastConstabulary, 1896-1900, and received a direct commission into the Royal MunsterFusiliers, 1900. He served as Captain and Adjutant, Gold Coast Regiment,West African Frontier Force, 1900-1903, Adjutant, 5th Battalion, RoyalMunster Fusiliers, 1904-1909, and was promoted into the 1st South StaffordshireRegiment, 1909. He served in the British Expeditionary Force, France, 1916-1918,and retired in 1920. In 1902 he married Lena Duncan, with whom he had one sonand two daughters.
