A series of 21 exercise books belonging to Delia Derbyshire at secondary school. These are the most formal of the school notebooks represented in the archive, and contain exercises and assignments which have been marked by teachers. They cover eight different subject areas, although the largest grouping relates to aspects of mathematics (including geometry, algebra and arithmetic) - the subject she went on to study at university before switching to a music degree. Only one exercise book devoted to music survives here, and this is disappointingly brief, although it shows her familiarity with certain composers at this time. Perhaps most interesting are the English exercise books, which contain essays revealing Derbyshire's views on a range of subjects, original compositions, and pieces on the work of other writers she studied or admired.
